Facts on Green Building

Green Building
- also known as sustainable building, is defined by the Environmental Protection Agency as the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction.

To put it simply, green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council, in the United States alone, buildings account for:
•    72% of electricity consumption,
•    39% of energy use,
•    38% of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions,
•    40% of raw materials use,
•    30% of waste output (136 million tons annually), and
•    14% of potable water consumption.

Green building helps the environment by improving air and water quality, reducing solid waste, and conserving natural resources.  It also offers tremendous economic benefits such as reduced operating costs, enhanced profits, improved employee productivity and satisfaction, and optimized life cycle performance.  The whole community can benefit from green building as it reduces strain on infrastructure, improves the indoor and outdoor environment, and contributes to an overall improved quality of life.
